Personality:
"I will prove to Father that I am a worthy son!"
Loki has a great desire to prove himself, and is very easily prone to jealousy, particularlywhere his brother is concerned. He feels that he was least loved by his family, and as a result of his percieved neglect, mostly by his father, he has serious self-esteem problems. He seeks to fix these problems by putting himself above others, whether he belongs there or not. He hides behind manipulation and deciet, putting up a facade of control while inwardly he is a seething ball of rage waiting for an excuse to explode. To this end, he also gives off the impression of being somewhat carefree, using various forms of laughter to cover insecurities and nervousness.
A skilled tactician, he prefers to control people and events for his own ends rather than getting his own hands dirty, though he will when he has to, and sometimes takes great pleasure in it. At times, his machinations can go undected until it is too late for the victims, and other times, it can be turned around on him due to his arrogance in assuming himself to be the smartest person in the room at all times. Also due to this, he ends up underestimating others while overestimating his own abilities. More often than not, he is not as clever or skilled as he believes himself to be.
Likely due to not being a "true" Asgardian, he is more emotional than other citizens of Asgard and has often found himself in tears over some event or other. It was probably due to this, among his other differences from his adopted people, that the general population of Asgard tended to favor his older brother, Thor, who was much more the ideal of the people: strong, brutish, combat-ready. Overall, Loki considers himself to be less than Thor's equal due to this treatment of him, though that is not to say he didn't have friends. His friends were mostly Thor's friends, however, and his skill in magic helped them several times and part of him believed that he could belong with them, until his tendency toward mischief went too far and he ended up losing the trust of all of them, if they ever trusted him to begin with (he's not too sure whether they did or not, but given his self-esteem issues, it's likely that he believes they never did).
After discovering his true heritage, Loki's already low self-esteem plummeted, he became filled with self-hatred, and his perceptions of his family's love for him became twisted. He never doubted for a moment, though, that they still loved him, until he was disowned by his father and denounced by his brother. He became suicidal and attempted to end his own life by falling from the shattered bridge of Asgard into deep space, but the attempt failed. Since then, he has decided that if he cannot earn access to the throne, he'll stop at nothing to take it by force.
“Cause I'm with you to the end of the line.”
Family:

Biologial Father: Laufey (deaceased)
Biological Mother: Farbuti (status unknown)
Adopted Brother: Thor
History:
"The Casket wasn't the only thing you took from Jotunheim that day, was it?"
Born in 965 AD, Loki was adopted and named by Odin following the King's defeat of Laufey and the Jotun forces. The infant had been abandoned by his family due to his unusual small size. He was brought to Asgard and raised alongside Odin and Frigga's biological son, Thor. At the age of twelve, he and Thor heard Odin's tale of victory over the Frost Giants and were shown the Casket of Ancient Winters, the source of that races' power. Loki wondered aloud if the Frost Giants were still out there, and upon Thor's claim that he would hunt and slay them all when he was grown, Odin taught them that a wise king never seeks out war, but must be prepared for it. His claim that both of them were born to be kings would one day come back to haunt Loki.
Throughout his childhood, he was favored more by his mother, who shared with him her magic so that he would have something all his own, while his brother seemed destined to follow in their father's footsteps. Being the prince of a warrior race, Loki also learned how to fight and defend himself in combat. He became a masterful tactician and strategist, often being the one to use his magic to help him and their friends retreat or escape easily, and insisting on surveying the enemy before attacking, gauging strengths and weaknesses to give them the advantage.
As Loki grew, so did his envy towards Thor, and by the time his older brother was set to be coronated as King of Asgard, with Loki meant to be at his side as counsel, he had become dangerous in his jealousy. Despite offering encouraging words before the ceremony, it was through his machinations that it was interrupted before the crown could be passed down. He had allowed a handful of Jotuns to infiltrate the weapons vault. They were stopped by the Destroyer, and Thor sought to retaliate, but Odin refused, and Loki took advantage of his brother's state of mind. He claimed that there was nothing they could do, knowing that Thor would take the bait, and when he did, Loki informed the Einherjar of Thor's intentions, hoping to have his brother stopped before they made it to Jotunheim. When they, along with Sif and the Warriors Three, arrived at Heimdall's observatory, Loki attempted to stall for time, but was interrupted by Thor and the six of them traveled to Jotunheim. Despite Loki's efforts to get Thor to retreat, he was taunted into engaging the Jotuns in combat. During the fight, Loki came into physical contact with one of them and stared in shock and confusion as his armor fell away and his skin changed to blue. Due to the overwhelming forces of the Jotuns, they were forced to retreat and were cornered by the Bifrost site. It was then that Odin arrived and attempted to diffuse the situation. The attempt failed and Laufey declared war on Asgard.
Back home, Loki remained behind in the observatory while Sif and Hogun escorted Fandral and Volstagg to the healing room. When Odin began berating Thor for disobeying his orders, Loki attempted to intervene on his brother's behalf, but was quickly silenced. He was forced to watch as his older brother was stripped of his power and station, banished from Asgard. He claimed to his friends that he never intended for it to escalate to that point before retreating to the weapons vault, where he was discovered by Odin with the Casket. Having discovered his true form, he tearfully implored Odin to tell him the truth, anger filling him at the betrayal. Lashing out in pain, he yelled at his father, though he immediately stopped as the King fell into the Odinsleep. Later, at his father's bedside, he asked his mother about Odin's motivations. Despite her answer and her assurances that he was loved, Loki was still hurt and upset and tried to leave. A steward of the throne stood in his way, holding Gungnir out to him. Confused, he looked to Frigga, who decreed that he should rule Asgard until Odin awakened.
It was in the throne room that his friends found him, looking to beg the Allfather to lift Thor's sentence. Loki heard their pleas in his father's stead, and denied them. Seeking now to keep Thor Earthbound, Loki visited him and spun a story of their father's death due to the compounded stress of Thor's banishment and the threat of war, and told him that their mother had forbidden Thor's return. On his way out, he sought to test his worthiness and attempted to lift Mjolnir, but the hammer wouldn't budge. With his brother out of the way for the time being, Loki turned his attention to forging an alliance with Laufey: Odin's death in exchange for the Casket. Upon his return to Asgard, he forbade Heimdall from allowing anyone to use the Bifrost until he had repaired the damage caused by Thor's recklessness. His orders were disobeyed in short order, and in retaliation, he stripped Heimdall of his position and turned the Casket on the watchmen before sending the Destroyer after his former friends. Aware of the battle raging on Earth, Loki was prepared to accept his brother's sacrifice and the Destroyer killed Thor on his orders. Unfortunately for Loki, his brother's sacrifice restored his powers and Loki had no choice but to rush his carefully laid plan.
Now working on a much shorter timetable, Loki allowed Laufey and his soldiers into Asgard, luring them to Odin's bedchamber, where he murdered his biological father minutes before Thor arrived and accused Loki of attempted murder. Loki falsely claimed the Destroyer had been following Odin's last command, not any of his own, before attacking his brother and fleeing to the Bifrost, turning it agaist Jotunheim and freezing the mechanism in place with the Casket. Thor found him there and they fought, Loki denouncing himself as Thor's brother and threatening both him and Jane. The fight ended on the bridge leading to the observatory when Thor pinned Loki down with Mjolnir, which he summoned back to him to destroy the bridge, much to Loki's horror. In an attempt to stop him, Loki took up Gungnir and attempted to kill Thor himself, but the bridge shattered, the ensuing shockwave threw them back. The observatory fell, and the two of them fell with it. Thor caught Gungnir, and Odin arrived in time to catch Thor. When Loki's attempted genocide was rejected by Odin, he released the spear and fell into the wormhole generated by the Bifrost.
"I have grown, Odinson, in my exile. I've seen worlds you've never known about!"
Loki arrived on Sanctuary, and was broken to Thanos' will by his servant, The Other. He was offered a deal: retrieve the Tessaract from Earth, and recieve rulership of the Earth in return. He was gifted a scepter that would allow him to bend others to his will, but it also exerted its influence over him, feeding his hatred towards his adopted family. Using a trick taught to him by Thanos, Loki manipulates Erik Selvig, using him to keep an eye on the Tessaract. A year into his self-imposed exile on Sanctuary, his mother reaches out to him via magic, but he rejects her. When the Tessaract opened a portal between Sanctuary and Earth, Loki travels through it and takes Selvig completely under his control, along with Agent Barton and several others. They steal the Cube and escape with it to a safe location, where Loki is contacted by the Other, and was threatened by him, steeling his determination. When he learned that Selvig needed iridium for the portal's construction, he and Agent Barton traveled to Germany where Loki created a distraction at a museum. After securing the eyeball Barton needed, Loki followed the fleeing patrons out into the streets, where he declared his intent to rule them.
Captain America intervened and Loki had nearly won (as far as he was concerned) when Iron Man arrived and put an end to it. Loki was taken captive aboard a Quinjet, but en route to the Hellicarrier, a flash of lightning and clap of thunder alerted him to his brother's arrival. Thor infiltrated the jet and removed Loki to a cliffside surrounded by forest, where he was interrogated about the Tessaract's location and implored to return home. Loki refused. When Iron Man and Captain America followed them, Loki sat back and watched them settle their differences, after which he was taken to the Hellicarrier and locked away in a cell built for the Hulk. He taunted Fury about the Tessaract and the Avengers, after which he was interrogated by Agent Romanoff. He revealed to her that he knew about her bloody past and threatened her, falling into her gambit to get him to reveal his plan. She attempted to warn the others, but the Hulk was unleashed anyway, providing the perfect distraction for his escape, during which he trapped Thor in the cell and murdered Agent Coulson.
He was waiting at Stark Tower to welcome his army when Iron Man arrived to threaten him. Loki paid his threats no mind and instead tried to control Stark, but failed to bring the Armored Avenger under his control. Annoyed and frustrated at the constant roadblocks, he threw Stark out of the window, only for Stark to deploy a fresh suit of armor and attack him with it. It was then that his portal opened and his army arrived. Shortly after, Thor also arrived and attempted once more to talk him around. The scepter's control over him subsided long enough for Loki to seriously consider taking Thor's offer, despite telling his brother it was too late. Loki's control was forcibly taken from him again by the power of the gem inside the scepter, and he stabbed Thor instead of joining forces with him. When Thor retaliated, Loki threw himself from the tower, comandeering a Chitarui skiff and using it to lead his army. Caught off guard by one of Agent Barton's trick arrows, he found himself back at Stark Tower and faced with the Hulk. He attempted to threaten the beast, and was beaten down. Stunned and seriously injured, Loki had no choice but to lie there until his body's natural healing abilities took over, after which he struggled to push himself to his feet. His attempts were halted when the Avengers converged on him. Seeing no other options, he conceeded defeat. The Tessaract was handed over to Thor, Loki was bound in chains and muzzled, and the brothers returned to Asgard using the Tessaract.
"You'll make that witless oaf king while I rot in chains?"
Loki was brought before Odin following his return to the kingdom, where he was informed that his mother had pleaded for his life to be spared, and his life sentence was to be served in the dungeons. Frigga attempted to make his cell comfortable for him, having furniture brought in and sending books to keep her younger son occupied. After a year of her visits via astral projection and no sign of Thor or Odin, Loki sarcastically inquired after their concern. He denounced Odin as his father and Frigga as his mother, though they both knew he still cared deeply for her. It was to be the last time Loki would ever speak to her, as a Dark Elf disguised as a Marauder started a prison riot, releasing several prisoners, but leaving Loki's cell untouched. Taking an opportunity to harass Odin, Loki informed the Elf of the exit. When the riot had been stopped and the invading Dark Elf forces dispatched, Loki was informed that his mother had been murdered. Enraged, he destroyed the furniture in his cell. When Thor came to visit later, Loki put on a brave face, projecting an illusion of the cell in perfect order, Loki himself as well groomed as he could be in prison, but to Loki's shock, Thor saw right through it. Loki revealed himself to be disheveled, the cell a mess of broken furniture, scattered books and torn pages. Given the chance of revenge, the Trickster took it eagerly.
He shrugged off Thor's, Sif's and Volstagg's death threats on the way out of the palace, and expressed annoyance at Thor's escape tactic of stealing the Dark Elf ship, mocking his ability to pilot the thing. When Fandral left an Asgardian skiff to them, Loki took the helm, guiding the ship to one of his numerous secret passages that would take them from Asgard to Svartalfheim. En route to the Dark Elves camp, Loki and Thor came up with a plan that hinged on Loki's anger towards his adopted family and homeworld, helped by the fact that Kurse had seen Loki locked away in Asgard's dungeons, and so could convince Malekith that Loki was no friend to the Asgardians.
Once their plan was enacted and Malekith pulled the Aether from Jane, Loki shielded her with his own body while Thor attempted to destroy it. The attempt failed and Malekith absorbed the Aether's power before leaving Kurse and a handful of soldiers to deal with the Asgardians. Thor was set upon by Kurse and Loki, armed only with his dagger, was able to dispatch the Dark Elf soldiers with relative ease. Seeing his chance, Loki took a Dark Elf weapon and impaled Kurse with it, activating a black hole grenade on the Elf's belt. He allowed an illusion of himself to be impaled while he hid his true self from sight. Once the illusion succeeded and Thor believed him dead, Loki merely had to wait until an Einherjar guard came to investigate the battle site. Taking the guard's place, Loki returned to Asgard and reported to Odin before taking the King's place.
The battle against the Dark Elves won, the Convergence averted, Loki sat on the throne, disguised as Odin, while Thor expressed his desire to give up his claim to the throne. Knowing Thor would suspect something was wrong if he accepted Mjolnir, he allowed Thor to keep his beloved hammer and allowed him to protect the Nine Realms as he saw fit. Not long after, he sent Lady Sif to retrieve Lorelei after the latter's escape during Kurse's prison riot. He chose to send Sif specifically because of the history the two women shared, wondering if Sif would heed his orders to have her returned alive, or give into revenge and kill her. Quite some time later, he was informed of a rogue Kree landing on Earth. There had been much animosity between the Kree and the Asgardians, and it was because of this that he sent Sif to investigate the matter.

He was bored.
Bored with having no one to mock. Bored with ruling in disguise. Bored with the life he'd wanted for so long, if only because he could not rule as himself. He wanted Asgard to know who was leading them now, but he couldn't reveal himself. Not until his plans were complete, not until his ultimate victory was assured. Only then would they know who had brought them to that ruinous end. The ultimate revenge for their callous treatment of him, Loki's long-awaited victory, was nearing.
One year hence, two, even three, he didn't care how long it took. The further off that fated day was, the more time it gave him to plan. To move the pieces on the chessboard that was all of Asgard into place took time and patience. Now that he was King, even under guise as Odin, Loki had all the time in the world to plan, so long as he remained on his guard. If he became too comfortable in his power, too complacent, it all could fall apart.
Again.
That simply wouldn't do. As long as his oafish brother stayed out of his way, as long as Heimdall was blind to his true form, as long as Lady Sif and the Warriors continued to believe he was who he appeared to be, Loki was safe. Secure. He could sit freely on Asgard's throne, Gungnir close to hand, and plan his revenge. Of course, there was another matter that Loki didn't like to think about, but it needed to be addressed one way or another. He preferred to deal with it later rather than now, despite how often it came back to the forefront of his mind.
It was right there, at his fingertips. He knew exactly where it was, exactly what to do with it. His very life depended on it.
As Odin, he couldn't be seen to retrieve it, couldn't even hire a courier to bring it out where no Asgardian had ever ventured, where they didn't even know the coordinates. Hel, he doubted he could find it again on his own anyway. Best not to think about it now. A dark look covered his borrowed face as he firmly quashed those thoughts. There was a time and a place to think about the debt he owed, and it was not now or here. Not while he had bigger fish to fry.
Curse this infernal boredom, he thought, slouching a bit on the throne, drumming his fingers on the arm of the great golden chair. And curse the thoughts it leads to.
Where was a distraction when he needed one?
